Exceptional Treasures sells gently used goods and provides employment to individuals with disabilities who then develop a sense of responsibility and purpose while improving decision-making skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Exceptional Treasures is a store located in downtown Algona on State Street that sells gently used clothing, housewares and other goods. The store opened in 1986 as an extension of the vocational program and provides work to individuals in a community setting.

Jobs at Exceptional Treasures help our clients develop a sense of responsibility and purpose while improving decision-making skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Exceptional Treasures accepts donations of good used clothing and miscellaneous items on a daily basis.

Donation instructions: 

Please launder clothing and bring it in clean and in good condition.

Donations are accepted during store hours: 
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Wednesday
10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Thursday
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Friday
Closed Saturday and Sunday
 

Exceptional Treasures is unable to accept these types of donations due to liability:

  • Small appliances (including microwaves)

  • Large appliances

  • Cans of paint

  • Batteries, tires, cars

  • Bicycles

  • Baby cribs

  • Baby and toddler car seats

  • Infant play pens

  • Baby/toddler/child strollers

  • Infant walkers

  • Luggage

  • Televisions

  • Animals

  • Upholstered furniture

  • Mattresses

  • Life jackets

  • Weapons

  • Ammunition

  • Bicycle helmets

  • Christmas lights

  • Household trash

  • Computers and components

Our organization’s impact on the local economy in Kossuth County is substantial. Exceptional Opportunities directly provides 80 full-time and 30 part-time jobs in the Kossuth County area with an annual payroll of $4,500,000. Employees make retail purchases throughout the local retail establishments and restaurants in area communities as well as purchase homes, enroll their children in our schools and participate in local churches.

According to researchers at Iowa State University, the healthcare industry is vital to the rural community. The multiplier effects of wages and benefits that are paid to Exceptional Opportunities employees support a total of 225 jobs and $1,242,000 in retail sales throughout these communities. In addition, Exceptional Opportunities purchases supplies and utilities from local businesses whenever possible.
